A través de la revisión de un amplio número de libros impresos durante los siglos XVI-XVIII a ambos lados del Atlántico se estudia la relación entre los paratextos y los textos literarios de los autores más importantes de la Nueva España. El presente estudio se centra, pues, en el análisis de los paratextos literarios que formaban parte del espacio preliminar del libro impreso y que se estructuraban en torno a ciertos recursos y tópicos retóricos. La aprobación, el prólogo, la dedicatoria y las poesías laudatorias se ven en relación con el texto literario que preceden –y al que se refieren– como potentes generadores de discursos, y permiten entender la intricada relación entre los círculos letrados y las instituciones que ostentaban el poder en la Nueva España. Estudiados, primero, de manera aislada; y luego en su conjunto en los preliminares de las obras de sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, los paratextos literarios dan cuenta de los procesos de censura, crítica literaria y legitimación social que determinaban la creación y difusión de la literatura escrita en la Nueva España.
