Eine junge Familie ist gerade dabei, das neue Einfamilienhaus zu beziehen, als sich herausstellt, dass der 62-jährige (Schwieger-)Vater an Alzheimer leidet. Die Familie nimmt ihn zu sich, der Krankheitsverlauf schreitet voran, bald ist eine Rundum-Betreuung nötig - das familiäre Zusammenleben gerät in eine schwere Krise. Der Film überzeugt nicht nur durch das brillante Charakterspiel von Götz George, der einfühlsam den dramatischen Persönlichkeitsverfall des Alzheimer-Patienten darstellt. Thema des Filmes ist vor allem der Generationenkonflikt, der aufbricht, wenn die alten Eltern krank und verwirrt werden. Fragen wie: "Soll ich Mutter zu mir nehmen?", "Muss der Vater ins Pflegeheim?" erfordern Entscheidungen mit tiefgreifenden Folgen. Bislang verdrängte Spannungen zwischen den Ehepartnern treten zu Tage, Spannungen zwischen dem alten Vater und dem erwachsenen Sohn leben auf, genauso zwischen dem jugendlichen Sohn und seinem Vater. Der Film bietet keine Lösungen, kein Happy End, er macht betroffen, nachdenklich, öffnet Türen zum besseren Verständnis von Menschen, die an Alzheimer erkranken, und von pflegenden Angehörigen.
