Die Kinder wollen Marta glücklich machen. So glücklich, wie sie es vor vielen Jahren zu Hause in der Ukraine gewesen ist. Marta aber bleibt traurig. Wir brauchen dich, bleib immer bei uns! bettelt die quecksilbrige Janet. Und Gregory, der ernste, als herzlos verschriene Junge, fragt endlich: Irgend etwas muß es in deiner Küche gegeben haben, was es bei uns nicht gibt. Was war das? Marta nestelt verlegen an ihrer Schürze, und ihre Wangen sind plötzlich glutrot. Ihr habt keinen GUTEN ORT, sagt sie dann. Wie soll sie es ihnen erklären? Unsere Heilige Jungfrau mit dem Jesuskind. Mit Gold und Edelsteinen und Perlen und Rubinen... Gregory weiß jetzt, wonach Marta sich sehnt. So wein doch nicht, sagt er, ich werde dir eine Ikone besorgen. Und Gregory macht sich auf, ein Bild für Marta zu finden. Als er einsehen muß, daß man es weder kaufen noch ausleihen kann, faßt er heimlich, ohne den Eltern ein Sterbenswörtchen zu sagen, einen tollen Plan. In der "Küchen-Madonna" erfährt der Leser die abenteuerliche Geschichte Gregorys. Rumer Goddens erzählt von der ergreifenden Liebeserklärung eines Jungen an eine ältere Frau, die seinem Leben Wärme, Sicherheit und jenes Maß an genialer Unordnung gibt, nach der wir alle uns in einer nüchtern gewordenen Welt insgeheim sehnen.
