Der Teppich von Bayeux, ein 70 Meter langer, 50 cm breiter Leinenstreifen, bestickt mit Szenenfolgen, die die Eroberung Englands durch die Normannen 1066 darstellen, entstand bald nach dem Ereignis selbst und ist ein trotz Restaurierungen gut erhaltenes Zeugnis frühmittelalterlicher Kunst. Herkunft und Funktion sind umstritten, die Bilderfolgen werfen Rätsel auf. Der Verfasser diskutiert Herkunft, Bildprogramm, Motive, Inschriften, Technik und Funktion des Teppichs in einer ausführlichen, neuere Forschungsergebnisse einbeziehenden Darstellung und interpretiert den Teppich als "mobiles Triumphdenkmal" der siegreichen Normannen. Der Tafelteil enthält die vollständige farbige Abbildung des Teppichs mit Übersetzung der Inschriftung und Deutung der Bildfolgen. Nach dem sehr teuren Grundlagenwerk von Wilson (1985; 228,00 DM nicht im Besprechungsdienst) ein zumindest erschwinglicher, sehr schön gestalteter Titel. (3) (LK/HL: Ittekkot)
