Der Autor erklärt die historischen Versuche der 3D-Darstellung, erläutert ausführlich die physikalischen und biologischen Grundlagen der visuellen Wahrnehmung und demonstriert einfache Techniken, die die Illusion eines dreidimensionalen Erscheinungsbildes mit einfachen Mitteln erzeugen können. Danach werden verschiedene komplexere autostereoskopische Raumbildtechniken dargestellt, wobei neben technischen Details auch die Limitierungen und Grenzen einzelner Verfahren an Beispielen gezeigt werden - was in Folge auch zu einer Diskussion der gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanz dieser Techniken führt.
