Wenn man schon die Menge der Bücher um ein weiteres vermehrt, sollte man sich selbst und den Lesern Rechenschaft darüber ablegen, worüber, für wen, warum und wie man es schreibt, und sich am Unterschied zwischen Wollen und Gelingen beurteilen lassen. Worüber? - Das Wissensgebiet "Quantenelektronik" (in seinen Anfängen ein Ableger der Hochfrequenzspektroskopie) befaßt sich ausgehend von einer adäquaten, mikroskopischen, quantentheoretischen Beschreibung mit den physikalischen Effekten der Wechselwirkung von elektromagnetischer Strahlung mit Materie und den Prinzipien von technischen Geräten, die in ihrer Wirkungsweise darauf beruhen. Dabei kommt der intensiven kohärenten optischen Strahlung eine zentrale Bedeutung zu, weil durch sie erst eine Fülle neuer Verfahren und Techniken möglich geworden ist, von der hochauflösenden Spektroskopie über die Laserchemie bis zur Übertragung üblicher elektrotechnischer Methoden in den optischen Spektralbereich (etwa für Zwecke der optischen Nachrichtentechnik, die gerade den Sprung aus den Laboratorien in den Feldversuch geschafft hat) . Es erscheint daher sinnvoll, die unterschiedlichsten Aspekte der Erzeugung, Ausbreitung und Detektion von intensivem, kohärentem Licht in einem Buch gemeinsam zu behandeln (daher der Untertitel: Optik und Laser). Daraus ergeben sich aber zwei Konsequenzen. Zum einen wird manche, nicht eigentlich zur Quantenelektronik zählende Überlegung aufgenommen werden müssen, zum anderen muß auf manchen, eindeutig zur Quantenelektronik zählenden Effekt (z.B. den Josephson-Effekt) verzichtet werden
