Mit dem gleich aufgemachten Band zu "Reaktionen" beschließt Gray seine Trilogie zur Chemie (vgl. "Die Elemente", ID-B 24/10, und "Moleküle", ID-A 22/15). Von den drei Sachbüchern ist wohl das vorliegende das schwächste, hat sich der Autor in dieser maßgeblich visuell wirkenden Reihe jetzt doch eines Themas angenommen, das mehr oder weniger einen zeitlichen Verlauf abbilden muss. Das ist für einige Experimente gelungen, andere zeigen einfach schöne Flammen auf schwarzem Grund und sind weniger informativ. Die Strukturformeln sind bereits aus dem Band "Moleküle" bekannt. Gray beschreibt zahlreiche Vorführungen von Reaktionen ("Experiment" sollte man seiner Meinung nur Versuche nennen, deren Ausgang man nicht voraussagen kann), die teilweise noch heute (wenn Sicherheitsvorschriften sie nicht verbannt haben) im Unterricht gezeigt werden. Nicht alles ist nachahmenswert! Nebenher erhält der Leser Einiges an chemischem Faktenwissen, wenn es auch oft etwas unsystematisch dargeboten wirkt. - Zur Komplettierung der Reihe.
