Menschen, die unter einer Körperdysmorphen Störung (KDS) leiden, beschäftigen sich bis zu mehreren Stunden täglich mit einem oder mehreren wahrgenommenen Makeln ihres Körpers, obwohl andere Personen ihre Befürchtungen nicht teilen. Sie führen zeitaufwendige, sich wiederholende Verhaltensweisen oder gedankliche Handlungen aus, z.B. überprüfen sie ständig ihr Aussehen in Spiegeln oder vergleichen das eigene Aussehen mit dem von anderen, was zu einer starken Beeinträchtigung der sozialen Beziehungen bis hin zur sozialen Isolation führen kann. Der Band liefert zunächst eine Beschreibung der Störung, referiert aktuelle Daten zur Epidemiologie und Komorbidität und gibt Hinweise zur Entstehung und Diagnostik der Störung. Im Anschluss wird praxisorientiert das kognitiv-verhaltenstherapeutische Vorgehen beschrieben. Zentrale Elemente des Behandlungsansatzes sind die gezielte Veränderung negativer aussehensbezogener Gedanken und Grundüberzeugungen sowie ungünstiger Aufmerksamkeitsprozesse, Verhaltensexperimente und die Exposition mit Reaktionsverhinderung. Dabei geht der Band auch auf Schwierigkeiten bei der Durchführung der Therapie sowie auf Suizidalität ein. Weitere optionale Behandlungsbestandteile sowie die pharmakologische Behandlung werden zusammenfassend dargestellt.
