Dieses Buch überzeugt, wie nur wenige andere, in jeder Hinsicht: Das Papier, der Offsetdruck, das Schriftbild, die Bindung und der Einband, die Abbildungen und - nicht zuletzt - der Gedankengang, der aus einer Vorlesungsreihe für Anfangssemester an der Erasmus-Univ. in Rotterdam entstanden ist. Der Autor (geboren 1954), hier bisher nicht besprochen, wendet an, was Hegel abstrakt formuliert hat: Die Philosophie sei "ihre Zeit in Gedanken gefasst". Dies manifestiere sich in Texten, auch in literarischen, in Werken der Musik, der Malerei und der bildenden Kunst sowie auch in politischen (Gegen-)Strömungen bis hin zu Revolutionen. In 23 Kapiteln wird die Geschichte der Moderne bis zur Gegenwart problemorientiert erzählt; z.B. der Antimodernismus, eine im späten 19. Jahrhundert bereits einsetzende Reaktion auf die Verwissenschaftlichung der Lebenswelt. Der moderne Mensch brauchte Gott nicht mehr - und seitdem ringt er jedoch mit den Ungeheuern, die dem "Schlaf der Vernunft" (Francisco de Goya, 1799, hier Seite 59) entsprungen sind.
