Ein 500 Jahre alter Erzähler schildert in 5 Geschichten seine Suche nach dem Wesen der Liebe: Vom 16. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert reist der Hörer mit dem außergewöhnlichen, gelehrten Erzähler durch Raum und Zeit und lernt immer mehr über das unbegreifliche Phänomen Liebe. Es beginnt mit der Liebesgeschichte der beiden Waisenkinder Frans und Amalie in Dänemark, die nur geringe Zeit dauert und deren Kind unerkannt im Kloster von den Mönchen aufgezogen wird. Der Maler Gregarius ist ein außergewöhnliches Talent und bannt im Amsterdam des 17. Jahrhunderts die immer gleiche Frau auf seine Bilder. Die Liebe zur Philosophie wird in einer Geschichte aus dem 18. Jahrhundert vorgestellt. Schließlich reisen wir nach New York mit der Frage: Ist Liebe käuflich? "Dem 1975 geborenen dänischen Autor ist mit seinem Debüt ein großer Roman voller historischer und philosophischer Hinweise gelungen. Was vielleicht auf den 1. Blick verkopft und überambitioniert erscheint, entpuppt sich als zwar anspruchsvolle, aber wunderbar vergnügliche Literatur" (ID 39/10; BA 11/10). Stephan Benson liest beeindruckend authentisch.
