Series Statement: Refiguring American Music : 25
Content: In Songbooks, critic and scholar Eric Weisbard offers a critical guide to books on American popular music from William Billings's 1770 New-England Psalm-Singer to Jay-Z's 2010 memoir Decoded. Drawing on his background editing the Village Voice music section, coediting the Journal of Popular Music Studies, and organizing the Pop Conference, Weisbard connects American music writing from memoirs, biographies, and song compilations to blues novels, magazine essays, and academic studies. The authors of these works are as diverse as the music itself: women, people of color, queer writers, self-educated scholars, poets, musicians, and elites discarding their social norms. Whether analyzing books on Louis Armstrong, the Beatles, and Madonna; the novels of Theodore Dreiser, Gayl Jones, and Jennifer Egan; or varying takes on blackface minstrelsy, Weisbard charts an alternative history of American music as told through its writing. As Weisbard demonstrates, the most enduring work pursues questions that linger across time period and genre-cultural studies in the form of notes on the fly, on sounds that never cease to change meaning.

Content: He was the biggest star in gospel music before he ever crossed over into pop. At a time when record companies treated black artists like hired help, he demanded respect and a recording contract equal to that of top white artists of the day. And Cooke connected, in songs that still sound fresh today. Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Fidel Castro, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. are all part of this story. This book tells a story at once tragic and true: Sam Cooke's rapid rise to stardom; his troubled marriage and relationships with women; his triumphant recordings and--along with Ray Charles--his reinvention of rhythm and blues as soul music; and the senseless waste of his death by shooting at the age of 33.--From publisher description.

Content: Der 2. Teil (BA 7/06) gilt weiterhin: A. Posener (BA 8/93, 7. Auflage 2003) reicht für Kurzinformationen. Die Bücher von P. Guralnick sind nach der "Elvis-Bibel" von M. Hendrickx (BA 11/03) empfohlen. (2)

Content: "In Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1950s, there was hard-edged blues playing on Beale Street, and hillbilly boogie on the outskirts of town. But at Sam Phillips' Sun Records studio on Union Avenue, there was something different going on 8211 a whole lotta shakin', rockin', and rollin'. This is where rock 'n' roll was born. Sun Records: the company that launched Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins. The label that brought the world, Blue Suede Shoes, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Breathless, I Walk the Line, Mystery Train, Good Rockin' Tonight. The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records is the official history of this legendary label, and looks at its story in a unique way: through the lens of 70 of its most iconic recordings. From the early days with primal blues artists like Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King to long nights in the studio with Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, you will see how the label was shaped and how it redefined American music. Accompanying the recordings is the label's origin story and a look at the mission of the label today, as well as Sun Spot sidebars8212 a fascinating dive into subjects such as how the iconic logo was created, the legendary Million Dollar Quartet sessions, and how the song Harper Valley, PTA funded the purchase of the label. Written by two of the most acclaimed music writers of our time, Peter Guralnick and Colin Escott, and featuring hundreds of rare images from the Sun archives as well as a foreword by music legend Jerry Lee Lewis, this is a one-of-a-kind book for anyone who wants to know where it all started."
Content: Biographisches: "Award-winning and best-selling author Peter Guralnick is widely regarded as the nation's preeminent writer on twentieth-century American popular music. His books include the two-volume biography of Elvis Presley, Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love, and the biography of Sun records founder Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll. He is a Grammy award winner and an inductee in the Blues Hall of Fame." Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://lj.libraryjournal.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/libraryjournal_logo.png alt=Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from November 1, 2022 Guralnick ( Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley ) and Escott ( Good Rockin' Tonight: Sun Records and the Birth of Rock 'n' Roll ) have crafted a must-have volume chronicling the history of Sun Records since its inception in 1952. Behind the vision of what the label would become is the parallel story of its founder, Sam Phillips, and his determined quest for talent, eccentricity, or in his own words, individualism in the extreme. Opening with a foreword by Jerry Lee Lewis and ending with a touching afterword written by Knox Phillips (Sam's son), the reader is offered a unique and engaging peek into an era of legendary artistic value, including names like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Ray Smith, Billy Adams, and many more. VERDICT This beautifully designed book will captivate readers with a magnetic combination of storytelling, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and a stellar array of photographs portraying the many acclaimed artists that came to be associated with Sun Records. Unmissable and transcending time, this is the ultimate rock 'n' roll handbook. --Alessandro CiminoCopyright 2022 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "
