FRANZ BARON NOPCSA wurde am 3. Mai 1877 in Deva im Komitat Hunyad als Mitglied einer hochadeligen, seit 1852 den Barontitel führenden Familie geboren, die in der Geschichte sowie im politischen und gesellschaftlichen Leben von Siebenbürgen seit Jahrhunderten eine bedeutende Rolle spielte. Seine Mittelschulstudien absolvierte er am Wiener Collegium Theresianum. Sein weiterer Lebensweg wurde von dem Umstand grundlegend beeinflußt, daß seine Schwester ILONA 1895 auf ihrem Familiengut in Szentpeterfalva merkwürdige Knochenreste gefunden hat. Diese Funde wurden von FRANZ BARON NOPCSA noch im gleichen Jahr nach Wien gebracht und EDUARD SUESS, dem weltberühmten Geologen an der Wiener Universität, gezeigt. Auf Anregung von EDUARD SUESS hat sich NOPCSA an die Untersuchung der Knochen gemacht, wie sich dann herausstellte, der ersten Dinosauri- 1. LAMBRECHT, K. 1933a. 214. V erreste Ungarns. Er hatte sich in diese Arbeit immer stärker vertieft: die Fachliteratur studierte er im Wiener Naturhistorischen Museum, an der Wiener Universität hörte er Vorlesungen von Professor SUESS. Seinen ersten Vortrag hielt NOPCSA im 22. Lebensjahr, am 21. Juni 1899, in der Klassensitzung der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, mit dem Titel „Dinosaurierreste aus Siebenbürgen". Dieser Vortrag erregte großes Auf sehen in den wissenschaftlichen Kreisen und wurde im selben Jahr im Anzeiger der kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien veröffentlicht. 1903 legte er vor den Professoren EDUARD SUESS und VICTOR KARL UHLIG die Rigorosen mit Auszeichnung ab.
