Was aber bedeutet 'Zeitenwandel', wenn dieser nicht nur in diskursiven Verschiebungen nachvollzogen, sondern in soziokulturellen Praktiken untersucht wird? Dieser selten gestellten Frage nimmt sich Mirjam Hähnle an und bezieht sie auf Forschungsreisen – jene Aktivität, die die Wissensordnungen des 18. Jahrhunderts entscheidend prägte. Ihre wissens- und kulturgeschichtliche Arbeit fokussiert dabei die Arabien-Expedition (1761-1767) mit ihrem Hauptprotagonisten Carsten Niebuhr. Ihr gelingt es, zu zeigen, welch großen Stellenwert Relikte – materielle Zeugen der Vergangenheit – für die historischen Zeiterfahrungen der Nahost-Reisenden einnahmen. Damit beleuchtet sie einerseits die Nähe spätaufklärerischer Forschungsreisen zum frühneuzeitlichen Antiquarismus. Andererseits zeigt sie auf, wie in den Reisetexten mit unterschiedlichen Relikten 'ältere' und 'neuere' Zeitlichkeiten in konfliktreiche Konstellationen zueinander traten.
