Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts formierte sich im nördlichen China ein Geheimbund, der sich in kürzester Zeit zu einer Massenbewegung ausweitete. Seine im Westen als "Boxer" bezeichneten Mitglieder, die sich in 1. Linie aus verelendeten Bauern rekrutierten, bekämpften das Christentum ebenso fanatisch wie die imperialistische Politik der Großmächte. Im Sommer 1900 entlud sich ihr Hass in einem Aufstand, der mit einem Blutbad enden sollte. Die Boxer steckten Bahnhöfe in Brand, überfielen Missionsstationen und machten Jagd auf alle Ausländer und ihre zum Christentum konvertierten Landsleute und belagerten fast 2 Monate lang das Pekinger Diplomatenviertel. Am Ende schlugen die Streitkräfte der Großmächte den Aufstand nieder, eroberten und plünderten Peking und nahmen blutige Rache. Auf der Grundlage zahlreicher Augenzeugenberichte liefert die britische Journalistin Diana Preston eine äußerst detaillierte und anschauliche Rekonstruktion der Ereignisse. Dass dabei keine chinesischen Quellen berücksichtigt wurden, tut dem Ganzen kaum Abbruch. Nicht nur für größere Bibliotheken. (2) (Andreas Ufen)
