"Eigentlich hat jedes veränderliche Ding das Maß seiner Zeit in sich; dies bestehet, wenn auch kein anderes da wäre; keine zwei Dinge der Welt haben dasselbe Maß der Zeit." Johann Gottfried Herder statuiert 1799 die grundständige Eigenzeitlichkeit der Dinge und Lebewesen und die damit verbundene globale Pluralität von Zeitlichkeiten. Er benennt so das zentrale Faszinosum, das dem vorliegenden Band zu Grunde liegt, und verortet zugleich seinen historischen Entstehungszusammenhang. Gezeigt wird in 14 Aufsätzen an Beispielen aus Kunst, Literatur und Wissenschaft, wie einerseits an einzelnen Artefakten sich Zeit darstellt und damit relevante Einsichten in die Erscheinungsformen von Temporalität gewonnen werden können, wie andererseits aber auch jeder Darstellungsprozess zeitlich organisiert ist und durch die temporale Ausdehnung seine Eigenheit gewinnt. In dieser doppelten Hinsicht prägen sich "Ästhetische Eigenzeiten" aus, deren ästhetik-, kultur- und wissensgeschichtliche Bedeutung hier vermessen wird.
