Wer Philosophie ausschließlich im Elfenbeinturm vermutet, muss - so M. Burckhardts Ausgangspunkt in diesem kleinen Buch - nur einmal mit offenen Augen durch den Alltag gehen, um überall die Auswirkungen von dem zu finden, was ehemals "nur" Ideen waren. So begeben wir uns mit dem Autor auf den Weg und betrachten das Gymnasium, den Staat, die Null, das Münzgeld, die Uhr und andere Alltäglichkeiten unserer Welt mit dem (natürlich etwas banalen) Ergebnis, dass diese Aspekte unserer Kultur durchaus nicht voraussetzungslos entstanden sind. Der Verfasser vermittelt in essayistischem Stil den historischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Ursprung dieser für uns selbstverständlichen Dinge, der oft in "unpersönlichen" Ideen vergangener Epochen zu suchen ist. Vergnüglich zu lesen ist dies, allerdings nicht ganz voraussetzungslos. Wer keine herkömmliche Einführung in die Philosophie erwartet, wird mit dem einen oder anderen Aha-Erlebnis belohnt und geht vielleicht von da an etwas staunender durch die Welt. Für alle Bestandsgrößen. (1) KNO: Wenn wir an einem Schulhaus oder einem Gerichtsgebäude vorbeigehen, einem Polizisten begegnen oder auf die Uhr schauen, finden wir das völlig selbstverständlich. Doch wie sind diese Dinge eigentlich in unsere Welt gekommen? Sie waren einmal nichts anderes als Ideen. Martin Burckhardt erzählt uns die Geschichten hinter all jenen Wirklichkeit gewordenen Gedanken. Und so erfährt man, dass der Polizist nur deshalb so heißt, weil die alten Griechen einen Stadtstaat (zum Beispiel Athen) Polis nannten, dass die Vorläufer unseres Münzgelds Fleischspieße waren und was die Demokratie mit dem Alphabet zu tun hat. Verständlich und amüsant zeigt der Autor, wie die Philosophie unseren Alltag bestimmt
