The increasing availability of online health resources is making it difficult for nonprofessionals to make an appropriate selection. Nevertheless, patients often inform themselves about health related topics online before or after a medical appointment. In addition, elderly are more likely to search for health information and at the same time do not possess the competency required to deal with health related electronic information. Men in particular are interested in shared decision making and want to prepare themselves systematically for a treatment or before turning to a doctor. In this paper, the development and evaluation of an online tutorial to empower men aging 50 to 80 years to recognize the quality of health related websites is being presented. The results from this study show a significant effect of the tutorial usage on the critical eHealth literacy. In addition, the perceived usefulness was high. The manual may therefore provide elderly men with the skills and knowledge necessary to benefit from internet health information resources.
