Anton Steenwijk ist noch ein Junge, als das nationalsozialistische Deutschland die Niederlande besetzt. Als Widerstandskämpfer einen Offizier der holländischen Faschisten erschießen und den Leichnam vor dem Haus seiner Eltern ablegen, sind die Folgen für Anton dramatisch. Die Deutschen stecken sein Elternhaus in Brand, und Anton wird von seinen Familienangehörigen getrennt, die noch an Ort und Stelle umgebracht werden. Er wächst fortan bei einem Onkel auf und beginnt nach und nach, die Ereignisse zu verdrängen. Selbst als er nach Kriegsende vom schrecklichen Los seiner Angehörigen erfährt, verspürt er keinen Drang, die Täter ausfindig zu machen und zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen. Seine Berufswahl wirkt geradezu symbolhaft: Er arbeitet als Anästhesist, aber eigentlich, so scheint es, will er seine eigene traumatische Erinnerung betäuben. Doch immer wieder wird er mit der Vergangenheit konfrontiert, bis er eines Tages die Augen nicht mehr verschließen kann.
