Paracelsus wird die Aussage zugeschrieben: 'Der Patient ist der Arzt!' Stimmt dieser Satz auch für das 'kranke Krankenhaus'? Ein vergleichender Blick auf empirische Studien und die gängigen Theoriekonzepte zum Krankenhausmanagement zeigt das ernüchternde Bild von drei 'blinden Flecken' der Theoriebildung: mangelnde Beachtung nicht intendierter Konsequenzen; abstrakte, normative und praxisferne Theoriebildung sowie fehlende systematische Selbstreflexion der Theoriebildung über ihre getroffenen Annahmen. Eine diesem 'Befund' angemessene Alternative wird notwendig. Möglichkeiten einer konsequenzsensiblen, praxisnahen und selbstreflexiven Theoriebildung liegen in einer non-dualistischen Konzeption von Ethik, Kultur und Controlling im öffentlichen Krankenhaus.
