"[...] Die ersten Filmfestspiele waren ein großer Publikumserfolg. 1951 lagen große Teile Berlins noch in Trümmern, und die Berliner sehnten sich nach dem Glamour der 20er Jahre. Auch die Kinobesucher aus Ost-Berlin kamen in Scharen. Seit 1956 spielt Berlin als A-Festival in einer Liga mit Cannes und Venedig. Aber die Berlinale ist anders: Sie ist ein Kind des Kalten Krieges und wurde von ihm jahrzehntelang geprägt. Die Politik hat hier schon immer eine wichtige Rolle gespielt. So ist es auch nach dem Mauerfall geblieben. Weltoffen, politisch und künstlerisch radikal will die Berlinale sein, aber auch irgendwie glamourös, um Presse und Sponsoren zufriedenzustellen. Wie geht das alles zusammen? Der Film schaut auf die Berlinale und ihre Geschichte vor allem aus Sicht ihrer alten und neuen Macher. Ulrich und Erika Gregor gehörten 1971 zu den Gründern des Forums des Jungen Films. Der Schweizer Moritz de Hadeln leitete die Berlinale 22 Jahre lang – von 1980 bis 2001.
