Die Barsängerin Amy Jolly verdient sich in Marokko ihr Geld in einem Nachtclub. Als ihr der wohlhabende Geschäftsmann Le Bessier deutliche Avancen macht, schlägt sie sein Angebot jedoch aus. Stattdessen gibt sie dem Werben des mittellosen französischen Fremdenlegionärs Tom Brown nach, der daraufhin strafversetzt wird - direkt an die vorderste Front. Amy folgt ihm. Mit diesem Film ihres Mentors, des genialen Josef von Sternberg, wurde Marlene Dietrich in den USA zur Legende. Die berüchtigte Szene, in der die Dietrich eine Frau küsst, landete auf Vorschlag von ihr im Drehbuch und konnte auch ihrer Cleverness wegen nicht zensiert werden: Kurz vor dem Kuss tauschen die Frauen eine Blume aus, die die Dietrich dann an Gary Cooper weitergibt, weswegen aus Gründen der Continuity kein Schnitt möglich war.
