Die mittelalterliche Kultur Europas wird gerne als geschlossene, vom Christentum geprägte Einheit angesehen, die sich erst in den frühneuzeitlichen Pluralisierungsprozessen allmählich aufzulösen scheint. Dagegen stehen die Differenzen einer volkssprachig-oralen Adelskultur und einer überwiegend lateinischen, auf Schriftlichkeit basierenden Klerikalkultur, deren widerspruchsreiche Integration auch im Hochmittelalter noch lange nicht abgeschlossen ist. Die Spannungen wie auch Wechselbeziehungen dieser Kulturen manifestieren sich in besonderer Weise in der Relation ihrer jeweiligen Leitbilder: des "Helden" und des "Heiligen". Der transdisziplinär angelegte Band rekonstruiert die Konzeptionalisierungen dieser Idealfiguren in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft, Religion, Literatur und Kunst, um ihre gegenseitigen Kontaminationen, aber auch ihre Paradoxien und Aporien zu reflektieren. Die Einzeluntersuchungen entstammen der Germanistik, Anglistik, Romanistik und Skandinavistik, der Geschichtswissenschaft sowie der Kunstgeschichte.
