The following essay gives a critical survey of modern Chinese literature since 1949 in German translation, with special emphasis on works of the Reform Period. It analyses both the political conditions of literary production in the PRC and the societal conditions affecting the bookmarket in Germany, which until unification was divided into two disparate parts. In this respect the article also wishes to recall translations published in the eighties and early nineties, most of which quickly went out of print. Furthermore it raises questions concerning the literary quality both of Chinese and German texts, the dependence on the US book market, and the attitude sinologists should take towards China and her culture during the process of modernization.
