Directed by Im Kwon, the film tells the tale of two women as they search for truth along the Buddhist path. One of the women, Sun-nyeo, leaves her broken home to become a nun at Deok-am Hermitage. There she meets Jin-seong, a more ascetic nun who excels at meditation. Later, however, Sun-nyeo saves an alcoholic from a suicide attempt, but he rapes her and she is expelled from the temple. Jin-seong, meanwhile, heads to a mountain cave to mediate, but she is raped a brutal old monk who resides in the cave. Sun-nyeo then heads out into the world, only to return to the monastic life after misadventure and tragedy. With a very strong performance by actress Kang Soo-yeon, the film became the first Korean movie screened at the Moscow Film Festival in 1989. (Seoul Selection)
