Vid tiden för sin prosadebut med novellsamlingen Västerut arbetade Hilma Strandberg på telegrafstationen i Fjällbacka. Hilma Strandberg kom från en kulturell och högborgerlig familj i Stockholm, närde litterära drömmar och greps av tidens upprorsanda. Den s.k. genombrottslitteraturen och dess estetiskt-politiska utmaningar förvandlade i ett slag hennes föreställningar om författarens roll. Och det var i mötet med den bohuslänska kustkulturen och dess auktoritära samhällsmönster som de nya lärornas verkliga betydelse och möjligheter framstod i hela sin vidd. Hon ville rapportera vad hon sett med egna ögon.

Hilma Angered-Strandberg (1855-1927) var under sin levnad en av Sveriges mest lästa författare. Hennes kraftfullt realistiska skildringar av det schartuanska prästväldet i Bohuslän liksom delvis självupplevda berättelser från en hård immigranttillvaro i Amerika gav henne en central plats i det tidiga nittonhundratalets litterära liv. Genom Bokförlaget Korpens utgåva av hennes Skrifter i urval kan nu detta bortglömda författarskap återupptäckas.
