Anders als Demoskopie und landläufige Meinung uns lange Zeit glauben machen wollten, hat die Jugend die Erwerbsarbeit innerlich nicht abgeschrieben. Im Gegenteil: Für die Mehrheit gilt, daß sie Arbeit und Beruf bei ihrer Suche nach Identität einen hohen, häufig einen zentralen Stellenwert zuspricht. Wenn wir auf der Basis mehrjähriger empirischer Forschung dem kulturkritischen Trend, eine ganze Generation in ihrem subjektiven Verhältnis zur Arbeit krankzuschreiben, nicht folgen, so bedeutet das nicht, die traditionelle Arbeitsmoral zu bestätigen und für in Ordnung zu erklären. Denn tatsächlich hat sich vieles zwischen der Jugend und der Arbeit verändert, was uns neue Probleme aufgibt. Unser zentrales Ergebnis läßt sich in einem Widerspruch zuspitzen: In den persönlichen Identitätsentwürfen hat die Erwerbsarbeit für die Mehrheit der Jugendlichen einen hohen Stellenwert, gleichzeitig aber scheint sie für immer weniger Jugendliche den Kristallisationspunkt für kollektive Erfahrungen und die Basis für soziale und politische Identitätsbildung abzugeben. Was ein derartig individualistisches Verhältnis zur Arbeit politisch bedeutet, wagen wir heute nicht zu entscheiden. Hierüber bedarf es einer breiten Diskussion, in der auch unsere Interpretationen zur Disposition stehen
