Drukker en schilder, zakenman en dichter, vader en bohemien, Groninger en avant-gardist - Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman (1882-1945) is het allemaal. In 1908 richt hij een drukkerij op in de stad Groningen. Pas nadat zijn bedrijf begin jaren 20 bijna failliet is gegaan ontwikkelt hij zijn kunstenaarstalent, gestimuleerd door Kunstkring De Ploeg. Zijn avantgardistisch tijdschrift 'The Next Call' gaat de wereld over en hij wordt beroemd met zijn kleurige druksels waarin hij speelt met druktechnieken. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werkt hij voor de clandestiene uitgeverij De Blauwe Schuit. Op 10 april 1945 wordt Werkman geëxecuteerd door de bezetter. Sindsdien is de waardering voor zijn werk alleen maar toegenomen, mede dankzij de inspanningen van Willem Sandberg, directeur van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam
