Über kaum einen einzelnen Film ist so viel publiziert worden wie über "Casablanca", den Kultfilm par excellence. Brauchte es da noch ein weiteres Buch? Angesichts der geringen Qualität der Mehrzahl der bisherigen Publikationen und der erfreulichen Qualität der vorliegenden: uneingeschränkt ja! Die Filmjournalistin Harmetz versucht zu ergründen, warum "Casablanca" weit mehr ist als ein "handwerklich wie künstlerisch eher mäßiges Kriegspropaganda-Produkt" (D. Schwarz in der Besprechung des Jubiläumsbandes "Casablanca" in BA 3/93). Dem Geheimnis der Wirkung dieses Films kommt zwar auch sie nicht so recht auf die Spur, aber sie erzählt in flotter Schreibe und informativer Weitschweifigkeit, die die Bedingungen des Filmemachens im Hollywood der 40er-Jahre ebenso einbezieht wie die Schicksale der Filmemigranten und Biografisches, die Entstehungs- und Erfolgsgeschichte des Films. Die Bebilderung ist gerade mal so reichhaltig, gut ausgewählt und passabel reproduziert, dass man sich nicht beschweren kann. Zum Thema "Casablanca" vorrangig, aber auch zur Geschichte Hollywoods allgemein breitest empfohlen. (1) (Ingo Tornow)
