Content: This volume presents effective instructional programs focused on two perspectives on writing: the teaching and learning of writing as a skill and the use of writing as a learning activity in various school subjects or skills acquisition. It is focused on analysing micro-design features of the programs (such as learning activities, supporting materials, specific strategies, instructional techniques) but also, macro-design rules of intervention programs (such as, instructional sequence, instructional stages) based on research evidence provided for previous studies. This volume goes beyond a practical volume because it provides additional reflection and discussion about theoretical background and empirically based evidence which support the specific intervention programs described. Several chapters in this book include links to an Open Access e-book where teacher and student materials for the authors’ instructional approaches can be found (see ToC)

Content: "If there were a single question that could unite educational psychologists, it might be this: How can our understanding of psychology be used to improve the experiences of all who are involved in the educational endeavor? That is the theme that runs through all 64 chapters in the three volumes that this handbook comprises. Our target audience includes researchers and graduate students, but this handbook is also strongly targeted toward teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, educational consultants and other educational professionals, and policymakers. The volumes in this handbook present the state of the science and evidence for research-based practice in the field and help set the standard for the application of educational psychology in education. In addition, unresolved and controversial issues are explored, and areas requiring further theoretical and research development critical to the field are identified across a broad array of topics. The 20 chapters in Volume 1 address the past, present, and future of educational psychology; emerging design and data analysis approaches; some of the most critical theories driving research and practice today; research on critical constructs in research and practice that educational psychology has addressed; and emerging issues and cutting-edge topics in educational psychology. Across these chapters, authors typically present a brief history of their topic, summarize the state of the science, thoughtfully present applications and implications for research and practice, and examine directions for further refinement and future research"--Introduction. Content: "The purpose of this handbook is to bring together leading scholars in the science of educational psychology to present state-of-the-art evidence with the hope that this evidence can and will be used to improve educational practice. The chapters in Volume 3 of the handbook focus on the application of educational psychology to learning and teaching. These chapters address five basic concerns: the application of educational psychology across the life span, assessment and instructional decision making, teaching core skills and content, general methods of instruction, and teaching special populations. The most prominent emphasis across these 23 chapters is the identification of effective educational practices. The chapters in Volume 3 also emphasize the theoretical orientations underlying each period of development, core skill or content area, and instructional method. Although many of the theories that are examined in Volume 1 reappear in the chapters in Volume 3, they are now contextualized in a specific field of study, providing a nuanced look at how the theories operate in specific domains"--Introduction. Volume 1 (see record 2011-11701-000) addresses the definition of educational psychology, some of the most critical theories driving research and practice today, broad areas of research that educational psychology has addressed based on multiple theories and that make an important contribution to the field, and emerging and cutting-edge issues. Volume 2 includes 21 chapters that examine a range of individual differences, cultural factors, and contextual factors affecting student achievement, motivation, and beliefs. Volume 3 (see record 2011-11779-000) focuses on specific applications of research in educational psychology for assessment and decision making, teaching skills and content, promoting learning, and teacher preparation as well as across the life span and with special populations"--Publicity materials. Content: "This comprehensive handbook reviews the major theoretical, methodological, and instructional advances that have occurred in the field of learning disabilities. With contributions from leading researchers, the volume synthesizes a vast body of knowledge on the nature of learning disabilities, their relationship to basic psychological and brain processes, and how students with these difficulties can best be identified and treated. Findings are reviewed on ways to support student performance in specific skill areas/m-/including language arts, math, science, and social studies/m-/as well as general principles of effective instruction that cut across academic domains. Authoritative and up to date, the book also examines the concepts and methods that guide learning disability research and identifies promising directions for future investigation"--
