In der Reihe "Abenteuer Zeitreise" schildert der bekannte Sachbuchautor (u.a. "Die Geschichte einer Stadt", BA 12/02) die beispielhafte 3000-jährige Geschichte einer der heute z.T. vom Urwald überwucherten Mayastädte von den Anfängen als Dorf über den Höhepunkt im 8. Jahrhundert mit imposanten Pyramiden bis zur Wiederentdeckung der fast vergessenen Monumente Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Das Alltagsleben der Maya - u.a. Häuserbau, Handwerk, Vergnügungen - wird in den großflächigen vierfarbigen Zeichnungen mit vielen interessanten Details nachvollziehbar und regt zu historischen Vergleichen, aber auch zum Erfinden eigener Geschichten an. Dagegen bleiben die Herrschaftsstruktur und Religion, nicht zuletzt wegen der sehr knappen Texte, für Jugendliche recht fremd. So besteht die Gefahr, die Mayakultur vor allem als grausames Kuriositätenkabinett misszuverstehen. Inhaltlich überzeugt "Maya, Azteken, Inka" (BA 5/02) mehr, doch wegen der sehr ansprechenden optischen Aufmachung lässt sich eine ergänzende Anschaffung - auch für Schulbibliotheken - vertreten . - Stationen der Geschichte einer Mayastadt von 1000 v.
