Die allgemeinen Theorien, die in den vorhergehenden Abschnitten betrachtet wurden, sind wesentlich gefördert worden durch den Bau der optischen Werkzeuge, denn einmal sind diese wichtige Einrichtungen zur Prüfung jener Theorien, in erster Linie aber war die Entwicklung der theoretischen Kenntnisse notwendig, um die fortschreitende Vervollkommnung der mannigfaltigen optischen Instrumente überhaupt erst herbeizuführen. Waren es vorher einzelne hervorragende Gelehrte wie GAUSS, SEIDEL usw. , die rechnend die beim Bau optischer Anordnungen auftretenden Probleme zu meistern suchten, so werden in dem letzten Entwicklungsabschnitt des optischen Werkzeugbaues, zu dem auch unsere Zeit zu zählen ist, besonders durch die glänzenden rechnerischen Erfolge ABBES angeregt, überall in der Welt, wo optische Instrumente gefertigt werden, rechnerische Untersuchungen zur Grundlage der Herstellung von Fernrohren, Mikroskopen, Brillen, photographischen Objektiven usw. angestellt. Die Zeiten, wo man nur durch empirisches Tatmoment beste optische Leistung zu erzielen strebte, sind endgültig vorbei. Allerdings ist auch heute noch die nachträgliche Überprüfung des theoretisch erwarteten Erfolges durchaus notwendig und mitunter das Ergebnis nicht ganz jener Erwartung entsprechend, da es meist in der Natur des zu lösenden Problems liegt, mit unseren heutigen rechnerischen Hilfsmitteln nicht sämtliche notwendigen und hinreichenden Bedingungen für die gewünschte Güte der Abbildung finden zu können. Die einzelnen Abbildungsfehler, wie sphärische Aberrationen, Koma usw. , sind möglichst auf solche Werte herabzudrücken, daß sie für die zu fordernde optische Leistung nicht störend werden
