Aber welche Rolle spielt Westfalen dabei? Antwort darauf gibt das Buch "Erneuerbare Energien in Westfalen" das der Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) jetzt als Band 10 des Atlasses von Westfalen herausgegeben hat. Grundlage des Buches ist eine Untersuchung im Auftrag der Geographischen Kommission für Westfalen des LWL, die den derzeitigen Ausbaustand der Erneuerbaren Energien in Westfalen zeigt und deutlich macht, dass die Verteilung entsprechend der geographischen Grundvoraussetzungen in Westfalen sehr heterogen ist: Windenergie und Solarenergie wird fast überall genutzt, vor allem aber im Münsterland und Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Strom durch Biomasse gewinnen vor allem die ländlichen Räume, da dort benötigte Abfälle und Pflanzenmengen vermehrt auftreten. Die Wasserkraft wird fast ausschließlich im mittelgebirgigen Gelände Westfalens genutzt.
