In der Öffentlichkeit wird die Sicherheit industrieller technischer Anlagen immer dann diskutiert, wenn die Medien über einen betrieblichen Störfall mit großen nachfolgenden Konsequenzen berichten. Das dürfte wohl einer der Gründe sein, warum industrielle Risiken üblicherweise unkritisch mit spektakulären Großunfällen wie etwa Bhopal, Mexico City oder Flixborough verbunden werden. Tatsache dagegen ist, daß das Risiko -ermittelt als stochastisches Produkt aus Unfallfolge mal dessen Eintrittswahrscheinlichkeit - insgesamt eher durch die größere Zahl der Kleinstunfälle, beispielsweise Arbeitsunfälle, bestimmt wird. Ökonomisches Vorgehen im Sine des effektivsten Einsatzes vorhandener Mittel mit maximaler Risikominderung gebietet deshalb an sich größeren Aufwand zur Minderung der Folgen von Kleinunfällen zu treiben. Da aber in der Öffentlichkeit Großunfälle stärker wahrgenommen werden, müssen auch hier Anstrengungen zur Konsequenzminderung gemacht werden. Betrachtet man Unfälle der Vergangenheit in der chemischen-petrochemischen Industrie mit katastrophalen Folgen, so sind solche mit schweren Gasen überproportional bei Unfällen mit sehr hohen Konsequenzen vertreten. Das liegt an der dynamischen Eigenschaft schwerer Gase, unabhängig von der möglichen schädigenden Wirkung. Das gibt Veranlassung, das bis jetzt nur unzureichend bekannte Verhalten dieser Gase intensiv zu untersuchen. Die Forschungsarbeiten über das Schwergasverhalten sind in vollem Fluß, hauptsächlich in England, USA und Holland. Im deutschen Sprachraum fehlen fast völlig Publikationen dazu. Um so mehr besteht die Notwendigkeit, neugewonnene Erkenntnisse Wissenschaft und Industrie zugänglich zu machen. Deswegen ist es zu begrüßen, daß der BMFT innerhalb seines Forderschwerpunktes "Risiko- und Sicherheitsforschung" die Herausgabe dieses Buches über "Schwere Gase" möglich gemacht hat
