Bei der Lektüre chinesischer Städte, wie sie dieser Band vornimmt, geht es nicht in erster Linie um Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Shenzhen und andere bekannte „Adressen", sondern vielmehr um das Chinesische an der chinesischen Stadt – um jene Merkmale, die alle chinesischen Städte mehr oder weniger aufweisen, um deren Kern, um ihre Syntax, kurz: ihren Code. Erst die Entschlüsselung dieses Gemeinsamen öffnet den Blick auf ihre innere Struktur und lässt uns die Vielfalt der empirischen Eindrücke gewichten und sinnvoll ordnen. Eine solche Stadtlektüre liefert die Bausteine des Codes der chinesischen Stadt: den Dualismus von offenem und abgeschlossenem Raum, der die Grundstruktur der chinesischen Stadt nachdrücklich bestimmt; die eindeutige Bevorzugung des privaten oder gemeinschaftsbezogenen gegenüber dem öffentlichen und gesellschaftlichen Raum; sowie die selbstverständliche Praxis, Wohnsiedlungen als exklusive, abgeschlossene Räume zu deuten und zu gestalten und vieles andere mehr. Mit diesem Code vermag der Autor dann auch neue, von europäischen Architekten geplante Stadtgründungen in China zu „lesen". Der urbane Code Chinas verhilft dem Leser so auch zu Einsichten in die boomende Stadtentwicklung Chinas.
