"Der Film folgt Max Pechsteins Weg aus der bescheidenen Herkunft in Zwickau zum führenden Maler des deutschen Expressionismus, indem er immer wieder seine Außenseiterstellung gegenüber den Malern der "Brücke" ins Zentrum stellt: so ihre gemeinsamen Malabenteuer mit Aktmodellen an den Moritzburger Teichen, was polizeilich verfolgt wird und besonders auf Pechstein zurückfällt. Oder ihr Zerwürfnis untereinander und der Ausschluss Pechsteins aus der "Brücke", weil er 1912 beim Erzfeind, der Berliner Secession ausstellt [...]. Ab 1945 lehrt er an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. Wieder malt Pechstein den Tanz, Erinnerungen an den Aufenthalt auf den Palau-Inseln Jahrzehnte zuvor, und zugleich das Aufbäumen letzter Vitalität und Leidenschaft eines Malers. Endlich anerkannt, stirbt er 1955 als einer der bedeutendsten Künstler des deutschen Expressionismus. Heute sind die Hauptwerke von Pechstein in den großen Museen der Welt und in einer ständigen Ausstellung im Max-Pechstein-Museum in den Kunstsammlungen Zwickau zu sehen." [tvinfo.de]
