Der Autor, ein emeritierter Biologie-Professor von der Universität Freiburg, stellt hier anhand von Kurzbiografien 50 (wissenschafts-)historische Persönlichkeiten vor, die sich mit Theorien oder Lehren zum Thema Vererbung und Evolution beschäftigt haben. Die Biografien sind unterschiedlich lang, der beleuchtete Zeitraum erstreckt sich von der Antike bis heute. Mit Thales von Milet (ca. 640-546 v.Chr.) fängt es an, weiter geht es u.a. mit Aristoteles, Thomas von Aquin, Anthony von Leeuwenhoek, Carl von Linné, Goethe, natürlich Darwin, Johann Gregor Mendel und Francis Crick bis zu unserem Jahrhundert, das mit der Sequenzierung des menschlichen Genoms begann. Wichtig ist dem (sehr rational orientierten) Autor bei der Beschreibung der Personen und deren Vorstellungen und Ideen zum Thema, gleichzeitig darzustellen, wie sehr diese teilweise ihrem Zeitgeist (bei Goethe nennt er da z.B. die Naturphilosophie), "Irrationalität und Aberglauben" verhaftet waren und wie schwer die Naturwissenschaft es hierbei hatte, sich mit ihrer Wahrheit durchzusetzen. Interessant und ansprechend-journalistisch geschrieben. (2)
