Der Begleitband zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung bietet einen kurzen Überblick über den "Gulag als das extensivste Zwangsarbeitersystem des 20. Jahrhunderts" (als umfassende Darstellung hier zuletzt A. Applebaum, BA 2/04). Reich bebildert, mit vielen Auszügen aus Erinnerungen an das Grauen im Lager, an die kräftezehrende Arbeit, den Lageralltag, die ständige Furcht zu verhungern, ist das Bändchen eine wichtige Hilfe, um die Funktion dieser Straf-, Arbeits- und Todeslager zu verstehen. Der 1. Teil zur Ausstellung zeigt chronologisch die Entwicklung des Gulags bis zur Auflösung. Dem folgen Häftlingsbiografien, ein Abriss über die Geschichte des Gulags und ein Text über die Gesellschaft "Memorial", die Zeugnisse der Verbrechen sammelt und so vor allem an die Lager erinnert. Die Typografie für die Bildunterschriften ist für ältere Leser hart an der Grenze. Insgesamt ein äußerst wichtiges Buch. (2 S) (Claus Baumgart)
