Die Ausstellung in Münster und Bonn dokumentiert die Auseinandersetzung A. Mackes (1887-1914) mit den wichtigsten Kunstströmungen seiner Zeit. Die Zusammenhänge seiner Arbeiten mit solchen des Fauvismus, Kubismus, Blauer Reiter, der Brücke-Künstler oder mit dem Futurismus, aber auch mit japanischem Holzschnitt werden jeweils mit Beispielen eines vorbildhaften Künstlers gezeigt. Auch der Impressionismus und Mackes Studium der Renaissance lassen sich in seinen Werken nachweisen. Dennoch hat er innerhalb der 10 Jahre, die ihm zum Arbeiten blieben, ein umfangreiches und sehr eigenständiges Werk erarbeitet, wie hier überzeugend dargestellt wird. Nach seiner Beteiligung an dem turbulenten Kunstbetrieb in verschiedenen Städten reiste Macke 1913 an den Thuner See, wo einige der bedeutendsten Werke seines Ouevres entstanden, nur noch übertroffen von den Arbeiten, die auf seiner kurzen Reise nach Tunesien geschaffen wurden ("Die Ordnung der Farbe", BA 10/00).
