In Deutschland ist Jugendsprache seit etwa 500 Jahren nachzuweisen. Schon in Luthers Tischgesprächen zeigten sich Studentenrituale mit entsprechendem Jargon aus der Universitätszeit des Reformators. Seit dieser Zeit werden Begriffe und Phrasen in speziellen Wörterbüchern gesammelt. M. Heine zeigt, dass Jugendliche und Studenten schon immer eine eigene Gruppensprache nutzten - nach innen als Erkennungszeichen, nach aussen als Abgrenzung und natürlich auch zum Spass. Schon Goethe legte eine kleine handschriftliche Sammlung von Studentenwörtern an. Turnvater Jahn und seine jungen Sportler prägten den Wortschatz des Wandervogels, so wie die Hippiekultur auf das Vokabular der deutschen Jugend Einfluss nahm. Darüber hinaus: Internetsprache und die Soziolekte von Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund. Der Autor erklärt, dass die Jugendlichen unsere Muttersprache weder verhunzt noch zerstört haben. Ganz im Gegenteil: Seit der Frühen Neuzeit haben sie unseren Wortschatz um zahlreiche Ausdrücke bereichert.
