Ibn Khalduns Einführung in seine Universalgeschichte gehört zu den bahnbrechenden Werken der Geschichtswissenschaft. Der Jurist und Gelehrte Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) diente mehreren Herrschern als Wesir, Gesandter oder Richter - immer auf der Suche nach einer gerechten und weisen Herrschaft. Seine Biografie, die ihn in den Kerker, in höchste Ämter und ins Exil führte, liest sich stellenweise wie ein Abenteuerroman. In seiner berühmten «Einführung», der «Muqaddima», beschreibt er gesellschaftliche, kulturelle und klimatische Faktoren als Ursachen für den Aufstieg, die Blüte und den Untergang von Dynastien. Damit wird er zu einem unzeitgemäßen Vorläufer einer modernen Soziologie und Geschichtswissenschaft, dessen Werk auch für die heutige Zeit eine Fülle von Anregungen enthält. Alma Giese hat für diese Ausgabe einen großen Teil des Gesamtwerks übersetzt. Nicht übersetzte Abschnitte werden in knappen Zusammenfassungen wiedergegeben, so dass der Leser erstmals in deutscher Sprache einen Überblick über das gesamte Werk erhält. Eine kundige Einführung in Leben und Werk Ibn Khalduns sowie Erläuterungen zu Personen, Orten und Begriffen runden die Ausgabe ab. Alma Giese, geb. 1944, Dr. phil., ist Islamwissenschaftlerin und gilt als einschlägige Kennerin der islamischen Literatur des Spätmittelalters. Wolfhart Heinrichs, geb. 1941, ist James Richard Jewett Professor of Arabic an der Harvard University.
