In unserer Gesellschaft stehen immer mehr Informationen zur Verfügung, doch wird es immer schwieriger, diese nutzbringend zu verwerten. Im Kontext einer so komplexen und weitreichenden Entscheidung wie der Berufswahl stellt sich zudem die Frage, wodurch sie sich so schwierig gestaltet und wie Rat Suchenden geholfen werden kann. Auf der Grundlage einer qualitativen methodischen Vorgehensweise entwirft Bernt-Michael Hellberg ein Prozessmodell der Entscheidungsfindung, in dem bezogen auf die Berufswahl das komplexe Geflecht von Gefühlsregungen und Gedankenabläufen entschlüsselt und in einen systematischen Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Mit seinem daraus entwickelten Explorationsleitfaden stellt er ein Instrumentarium zur Verfügung, das gleichermaßen von professionellen Beratern wie von Rat suchenden Personen benutzt werden kann. Es hilft, die oft noch unzusammenhängenden Gedanken, Überlegungen und emotionalen Empfindungen zu sortieren, zu vervollständigen, zu verknüpfen und dadurch die für das Treffen einer bewussten Entscheidung notwendigen Klärungen vorab herbeizuführen.
