Obwohl die afrikanischen Staaten längst keine Kolonien mehr sind, sind sie weiterhin von den reichen Industrieländern abhängig. In den letzten 50 Jahren flossen rund 600 Milliarden Dollar an Hilfsgeldern in die sogenannten Entwicklungsländer. Aber hat sich dauerhaft etwas entwickelt oder geändert? In Peter Hellers Film kommen hauptsächlich afrikanische Intellektuelle zu Wort und ihre Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse sind ernüchternd. Anhand dreier Fallbeispiele in Mali, Tansania und Kenia wird das Problem verdeutlicht, werden Ursachen analysiert und erläutert. Heller selbst bereist seit vielen Jahrzehnten den afrikanischen Kontinent und hat bereits zahlreiche Dokumentationen dort gedreht, auf deren Bildmaterial er auch in "Süßes Gift" zurückgreift.
