Auf einer kleinen Insel in der New Yorker Bucht errichteten die amerikanischen Einwanderungsbehörden 1892 ein Auffanglager, durch das bis 1924 16 Millionen Menschen geschleust wurden. Der Dokumentarfilmer Bober und der Schriftsteller Perec drehten 1979 einen Film über Ellis Island, aus dem dieses Buch hervorging. Im 1. Teil berichtet Perec über die "Träneninsel" und reflektiert über die Methode, Vergangenes zu vergegenwärtigen. Der 2. Teil enthält Gespräche mit einstigen Immigranten über die Gründe ihrer Auswanderung und ihr Leben in Amerika. Der Bildteil dokumentiert die Emigration von der Einschiffung bis zum Geldumtausch in der neuen Heimat. Ein ansprechend gestaltetes Buch, das einen nachhaltigen Eindruck hinterläßt.
