Bei der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich urn meine erweiterte, aktualisierte und veranderte Habilitationsschrift von 1985. Mein Interesse an paradoxen Hand lungsfolgen entspringt einer langen Beschaftigung mit Fragen soziologischer Theorie und soziologischer Praxisfahiqkeit. Mit dem Thema der Arbeit sollen zwei Defizite in der Soziologie zur Sprache kommen: 1. Der Ordnungsgrad sozialer Erscheinungen wird Oberbewertet. 2. Die Notwendigkeit von Belohnungsaufschub als Voraussetzung fUr soziale Bindung findat bei der Erklarung sozialen Handelns zu wenig BerOcksichtigung. Das erste fUhrt zur Beschreibung der paradoxen Konstitutionen von verbundenam Handeln, das zweite zu einer Theorie sozialer Motivation. Die Soziologie gibt ein uneinlos bares Versprechen, wenn sie Ambitionen hat, eine Lehre von der Gesellschaft zu sein. Paradoxe Handlungsfolgen lassen sich auflosen und kehren unverhoffl an ande rer Stelle wieder. Motivationen verlieren ihren Optimismus, binden sich an andere Hoffnungen und haben ihre Konjunkturen. Eine ideelle Gesamtrationalitat, Gesamtgerechtigkeit, Gesamtmoral, Gesamtwahrheit stehen ausdrOcklich nicht zur Debatte -trotz aller Nachfrage. Es handelt sich bei paradoxen Handlungsfol gen mit ihren motivationalen Konsequenzen urn eine Fragestellung, die mit der Hoffnung verbunden ist, daB wissenschaftliche Aufklarung immer ein Verfahren des geordneten Verzichts auf Information darstellt und daB weniger mehr sein kann
