Von wenigen Werken abgesehen spielt Sibelius in unserem Konzertleben kaum eine Rolle. Auch herrscht offenkundiger Mangel an deutschsprachiger Literatur über ihn, der sich darüber hinaus sowohl durch seine nordisch-schwerblütige Tonsprache wie durch seine eigenartige Persönlichkeit (Depressionen, Paranoia, extreme Eitelkeit, Verschlossenheit) einem leichten Zugang entzieht. Geburtstag war Anlass für eine allgemein verständliche Biografie des finnischen Nationalkomponisten und immerhin neben Gustav Mahler bedeutendsten Sinfonikers seiner Zeit, der unter anderem auch in Deutschland ausgebildet wurde. Der Autor ist versierter Feuilletonist und versteht es, informativ und ansprechend formuliert über Leben und Werk des Komponisten sowie kompositorische Strömungen der damaligen Zeit und allgemein über künstlerische Einflüsse seiner Epoche zu berichten. Halb so umfangreich und verständlicher wie Tomi Mäkelä: "Poesie in der Luft" und in Ermangelung von Alternativen breite Empfehlung. Für Musikbibliotheken ein Muss
