Von der einstigen Marienkirche auf dem Harlungerberg in Brandenburg an der Havel zeugen nur noch bildliche und schriftliche Quellen sowie wenige bauliche Fragmente, da der im frühen 13. Jahrhundert errichtete monumentale Bau 1722/23 im Auftrag des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelm I. abgerissen wurde. Dieser Umstand gibt seit jeher Raum für zahlreiche Spekulationen hinsichtlich der einstigen Gestalt und Baumotivation. Die außergewöhnliche zentralbauartige Form, die zahlreichen Treppenaufgänge und Emporen sowie die erhöhte Lage werden in der Forschung häufig als Merkmale einer spezifischen Wallfahrtsarchitektur interpretiert, was der Marienkirche gelegentlich den Titel der "frühesten Wallfahrtskirche der Mark Brandenburg" einbrachte. Doch was versteht man eigentlich unter einer Wallfahrt? Gab es überhaupt Kirchen, die speziell für diese Nutzung geplant wurden? Wie plausibel ein Zusammenhang zwischen Architektur und Funktion tatsächlich ist und ob es nicht auch andere Beweggründe für die Errichtung der Marienkirche gegeben haben könnte, wird in der vorliegenden Baumonografie, die als Masterarbeit im Fach Kunstgeschichte an der Freien Universität Berlin entstand, ausführlich erörtert.
