Mit wachsendem zeitlichen Abstand erfahren nicht nur die Bauten der Ost-Moderne eine positivere Bewertung, auch die Forschung zur Geschichte des DDR-Städtebaus fördert neue Erkenntnisse zutage. Die Paradigmenwechsel von der frühen Nachkriegsmoderne zum „Bauen in der nationalen Tradition" Anfang der 1950er Jahre, der Übergang zur Industrialisierung des Bauwesens Ende der 1950er und schließlich zum Wohnungsbauprogramm der 1970er/80er Jahre wurden bislang vor allem als Realisierung zentraler Vorgaben der Politik beschrieben. Maßgeblich für das Planungsverständnis in der DDR war die einzige universitäre Ausbildungsstätte für Planer, die Hochschule für Architektur und Bauwesen Weimar, wo sich Ende der 1980er Jahre de facto ein fachpolitischer Reformflügel formierte. Der vorliegende Band untersucht die institutionellen Strukturen des DDR-Bauwesens, die Konflikte und Handlungsspielräume von Architekten und Stadtplanern sowie die verborgenen Formen kritischer Fachöffentlichkeit.
