Seit ihm eine Kugel in den Rücken geschossen wurde, ist der junge Donovan Adams (Keenan Arrison) Quadriplegiker. Seine Mutter Shirley (Denise Newman) lebt mit ihm in Kapstadt und pflegt Donovan hingebungsvoll - ihr Sohn jedoch ist erfüllt von Bitterkeit und verschliesst sich ihr gegenüber. Shirley versucht trotz alledem, das Beste aus der Situation zu machen, anders als ihr Mann Gavin, der die Familie vor drei Monaten verlassen hat... "Who is Shirley Adams?" steht auf der Startseite des Films von Oliver Hermanus. Shirley Adams gibt es nicht, und es gibt sie doch. Hermanus griff eine Erzählung eines ähnlichen Falls von seiner Schwester auf und verarbeitet sie zehn Jahre später in seinem Debütfilm, der in seiner Heimatstadt Kapstadt spielt. In erster Linie wollte Hermanus zeigen, wie ein einziges Ereignis eine Familie zerstören kann. Gleichzeitig hat der Regisseur all die Themen in die Story hineingeflochten, die Südafrika auch heutzutage noch beschäftigen - Apartheid, Kriminalität, Armut... Shirley Adams ist ein Sozialdrama geworden, dessen leise Triebkraft und emotionale Anspannung man kaum einem Erstlingswerk eines 25-jährigen Filmers zuordnen würde. (Outnow)
