Este volumen sobre la filosofía de Pierre Duhem contextualiza su obra de forma sistemática y accesible, resaltando la herencia intelectual que recibió de Pascal y el fuerte influjo que ejerció en los responsables del giro historicista en la filosofía de la ciencia contemporánea, para después centrarse en la propuesta con la cual pretende mediar en el debate de la Francia de fin de siglo entre el cientismo -que no reconoce otra forma de conocimiento que la ciencia positiva- y los intelectuales conservadores -que proclamaban la "bancarrota de la ciencia". Es así como para Duhem, el análisis lógico de la física conduce a una suerte de fenomenismo convencionalista, mientras que la historia de la ciencia y la metafísica devuelve la confianza en el carácter realista de la empresa científica
