Das Buch ist eine Sammlung von Feldpostbriefen und sonstigen Informationen, die während des Ersten Weltkrieges von den Mitgliedern einer bürgerlich-rheinischen Großfamilie überliefert wurden. Die Kriegsnachrichten wurden in periodischen Abständen im Zirkel der Familie veröffentlicht. Urheber des Projekts war der Kölner Rechtsanwalt und führende Zentrumspolitiker Carl Trimborn, seit 1894 Vorsitzender der Rheinischen Zentrumspartei, seit 1896 Mitglied des Reichstags und des Preußischen Abgeordnetenhauses für Köln. Obwohl die Feldpostbriefe von den verschiedenen Kriegsteilnehmern aus unterschiedlichen Offiziersperspektiven, zu zufälligen Zeiten und von zufälligen Orten geschrieben wurden, spiegeln sie in ihrer Gesamtheit die Geschichte des Ersten Weltkriegs. Die Kriegsbegeisterung von August 1914, die Franktireurhysterie, die Munitionskrise, die großen Schlachten im Artois, in Flandern, in der Champagne und bei Verdun, die wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung des eroberten Landes, der Einsatz von Gasgranaten, das Auftauchen der ersten Tanks, die Entwicklung des Luftkriegs, das Rückzugsunternehmen Alberich, die Michael-Offensive, die Preissteigerungen für Lebensmittel, das Schicksal der Kriegsgefangenen im Westen und Osten - das alles erscheint auch in den Mars-Berichten.
